With the upcoming holidays, many people are likely going to do a lot of traveling. Whether you’re headed out to visit your parents or seeing some old friends, we leave our homes and our usual lives. That also includes our regularfitness plans, too. But, with all the sitting in a car for a long drive and feasting that’s likely to be going on, how do we keep ourselves fit while we’re on the move?

Eating while traveling

Traveling usually means that we feel pressured to eat fast and get back to moving. It’s hard to resist the old habit of a quick stop at the golden arches for a grab-n-go meal, and you’ll have to come up with some ways to avoid having to stop. Try brown bagging it. Before you ever leave, come up with a list of some healthy snacks (preferably that you won’t have to go rummaging through an ice chest while cruising down the road) that are good for you.

Since snacking is the most irresistible habit (next to singing with the radio) while you’re traveling, make sure that you have the right stuff available to you. Nuts are a great snack item while driving, easy to handle and full of protein. Fruits such as bananas are not only good for you, they are their own energy meal. High in potassium, bananas make a delicious snack and help keep you alert for the drive. Stay away from sugary donuts and sweets, since the sugar is not only bad for you, it’ll leave you tired while you’re trying to drive.

For a good meal, consider the ever so handy sandwich. Some fresh deli meat and a few veggies are a lot better for you than a greasy hamburger and probably a lot cheaper. Find yourself a good place to stop. There are plenty of rests tops on the road to stop and enjoy the scenery while you eat and stretch your legs.

Carry plenty of water with you. Instead of popping open a sugary, high caffeine energy drink or soda pop, try drinking some water. It’s what your body wants, so satisfy it when you’re thirsty. If you take the time before you take off, make your favorite health shake to take along with you. It can double as a snack and a drink.
Stay moving while you’re on the move

If you end up in a hotel during your stay, check and see if it has an in-house fitness room. Most do, and don’t forget to take advantage of it. Pools are often available, and hopefully they’re inside where it’ll be warm. Swim a few laps to get your heart pumping and keep your body moving.

If you’re visiting your family, don’t be afraid to get them involved. Talk your sister or uncle into going for a run in the morning. You never know, they may be looking for ways to stay active while they’re out on the road, too.

Don’t neglect your rest

All the activity that comes with a business or family visit can lead us well into the wee hours of the night. While it’s important to have fun, don’t let it hurt your body. You still need rest to ensure that your body stays in top shape.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while you’re out on the road isn’t improbable. In fact, it’s an adventure. While your travels take you away from your fitness center, they bring you to a new place with new people. And you never know who you’ll meet out there on the road to fitness.
