Have you ever thought about how “tough” you are? I don’t mean arm wrestling, I mean your resilience, the ability to recover and bounce back from any situation. Resilience is more than just a physical condition; it is about your mental abilities as well, as your body and mind work together at all times. The ability to bounce back from any situation and take advantage of it rather than let it hinder us is vital to survival. Throughout life we endure many setbacks and obstacles, and we must always persevere to increase our resilience in order to live life to the fullest.
Avoiding despair
Our brains are designed to dwell on negative thoughts, hence the reasons news reports and events tend to cover the bad side of situations. What you need to do in order to keep yourself mentally resilient, is to try to avoid seeing the glass half empty. You will not be able to eternally avoid negativity, but you can avoid thinking negatively. Try seeing things in a brighter light, especially when you say them out loud.
Kindness
People often say that kindness is a virtue, but that’s not all it is. Acts of kindness offer something mysterious for our body. A chemical in our brain called Serotonin, which allows us to feel good, is released and is far more effective primarily after we accomplish a good deed.
You don’t have to limit yourself to helping people on mere occasion, as volunteer work for groups (i.e. boy and girl scout groups, religious activities, or at retirement centers) will offer you a regular dose of kindness. Helping others is one of the best ways to help yourself become a far more resilient person.
Don’t dwell on failure
One of the most important things you can do is avoid dwelling on failure or even ailments. People often tell themselves, “If only I had,” instead of thinking, “Next time I’ll do this instead.” Your mind focuses on these things and drives towards them, just like finding yourself staring at a shiny object on the side of the road. You can find yourself slowly wandering toward it. Instead, you should live and learn. Tomorrow brings new chances and opportunities, and we must always focus on moving forward. If you keep looking back, you can’t see what prospects the future holds for you.
Healthy body- healthy mind
Resilience is not 100% dependent on your mind set, you must have a healthy body to maintain your toughness. Ensuring that you consume a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise is vital for physical performance and health. Consider joining a fitness center as the activity and interaction are very beneficial to your body and mind. You experience motivation and develop new relationships while you attain a healthy lifestyle.
Laughter is the best medicine
You know what everybody says – Laughter is the best medicine – and indeed it is. Laughter has a magical effect on life, it lets us play with life rather than endure it. It is renowned to reduce tensions, even the most extreme, to a more minimal level. Many people have indeed used laughter as treatments for ailments, relieving pain, and stress. Laughter has a psychological effect on the mind, helping us to turn the most despairing of thoughts into something funny. Comedy has been at the hand of man since the beginning of time, before doctors, before psychologists and physicians, helping us to cope with life and anything it can throw at us.
Toughening yourself up takes more than a few protein shakes and a hundred pushups. It is about staying focused on being well. Your mind is a powerful tool, offering the ability to alter our present conditions and become more resilient throughout any life challenge, whether it is disease or just day-to-day events. We live, learn, and bounce back every day.
